SLIDING SASH WINDOWS

Manufactured in our own workshop in Devon for delivery, and installation if required, throughout the West Country and as far as London and the South East.

Sliding sash windows are traditionally seen in older properties, but can be seen as a design feature in houses of any period. We can manufacture these windows either as part of a new design or to replicate windows in listed or other buildings.

These windows are formed of two main elements, either or both of which can be opened by sliding one element in front of the other.

The image below shows a typical example during construction, and is a popular "Georgian" style design, incorporating the smaller panes of glass such as are often seen in older listed properties.

Single Glazed Sash Window

This particular example is single glazed, but we can manufacture double glazed windows to suit your requirements. These windows have been finished with two coats of primer/undercoat, but we can also finish any of our products with a high quality stain or oil finish.

Traditionally, sliding sash windows were operated using a system of pulleys and weights as illustrated in the diagram below:

Traditional Sliding Sash Window

This system is still in use, especially in older properties or in listed buildings where it is a requirement to replicate the original design, but there is a newer system now which uses spiral balances, and this provides a modern, simple alternative as shown below:

A spring action mechanism housed within a tube that carries out the same job as the traditional pulleys and weights. As there is less timber used in the installation of the spiral balance mechanism, the end result is more economical and can also allow more light to enter the room.

We can manufacture our windows with either of the above systems, and if you would like further information on which type suits your particular circumstances, please call Chris on 01271 378296 or email to info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk

One or two sashes to slide?

As mentioned in the introduction, we can manufacture these windows so that either one or both of the sashes slide. An economical sliding sash window has one fixed element and one sliding- as only one set of pulleys and weights or spiral balances is required, this keeps the price down whilst maintaining the good looks of the whole.

Glass and Glazing

We can manufacture sliding sashes with either single or double glazed units, and the following options are available:

Sash Window Duplex System

The Duplex system
The double glazed units are manufactured with internal spacer bars at the intervals required by the customer, to which we bond timber bars as a part of our construction process.

This system has two main advantages. Firstly, the windows are more economically priced as there are less individual glass units, and less labour and timber required, and secondly the finished product admits more light in to the room because the bars are thinner than the traditional ones described in 2, above, as they do not have to support any weight.
Note - this system is not normally permitted in listed buildings

Different types of glass

There are options available- for example, a customer may request frosted or otherwise obscured glass for the bottom sash, for privacy reasons, whilst having normal clear glass in the top sash.

Leaded glass is also available. We are happy to help so please ask for more details - info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk

Mock Sliding Sashes

We can make windows that replicate the look of a sliding sash but operate as a normal hinged window, to give a very individual feel to a property:

Mock Sliding Sashes Windows

This window looks like a chunky sliding sash window on first inspection, but as you can see from the hinges this window actually opens outwards! We can create any look that you require- please call on 01271 378296 or email to info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk
