Stable Doors - Not just for horses!
House Stable Doors for Homes Supplied To The Whole Of The South Of England
A house stable door is made in two parts, so that either the whole stable door or just the top leaf can be opened. In this way, the entire door can be shut to retain heat in the winter, or when better weather comes, the top leaf can be left open to let in light and air whilst maintaining a degree of privacy and keeping in small children or pets.
DON’T BE MISLED BY OUR NAME- WE ARE BASED IN THE WEST COUNTRY BUT COVER THE WHOLE OF THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND, THE CHANNEL ISLES AND BEYOND, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH ALL YOUR JOINERY REQUIREMENTS
The house stable doors top leaf can be solid, can have a glass viewing panel of any size, double glazed if necessary, or it can have a full size glazed top door. This will also let in a lot more light than a solid top door. The glass can be totally individual- for example, you could choose frosted, coloured, patterned or just insert a piece of “bullseye” glass. (We can let you have information on the ranges available- please ask for advice info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk) The bottom half of the stable door for a house is constructed from tongue and groove panelling, in to which we are often asked to set a cat flap!
Our prices include the complete door and frame- it will arrive fully glazed, complete with your choice of ironmongery and two coats of either primer/undercoat or stain, and pre-hung in the frame. The benefit of this? All you need to do is take out the old door and frame and insert the new assembly in a pre-prepared aperture. We do of course offer a fitting service if required, depending on the distance from our workshop in Devon.
If your existing frame is sound, you may like to order the door alone, and prices are as follows for a standard size door, please call 01271 378296 or email info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk if you need a non-standard door:
Softwood door and frame £995 plus VAT
Iroko hardwood door and frame £1210 plus VAT
Oak door and frame £1350 plus VAT
If the frame is not required, the prices would be as follows: (all plus VAT)
Softwood £740
Iroko £885
Oak £985
All these doors are manufactured using traditional time tested mortice and tenon joinery. We use solid timber only, not engineered or laminated materials, and we are always to happy to discuss your individual requirements- please call or email.
Stable doors for houses can be constructed from a variety of timbers, softwood or hardwood, although a hardwood such as Iroko would be much more long lasting and is very easy to maintain. We use the traditional mortice and tenon method of construction, which is much sturdier than the cheaper dowelling method, and the section through the door is 55mm, whereas cheaper doors are often 45 mm thick. The top and bottom leaves of the door are rebated together in such a way that the top leaf secures the bottom leaf, and the top leaf is locked with a high quality British Standard 5 lever mortice lock.
As we are bespoke door joiners, our stable doors can be customised to your own requirements. For example, we could alter the proportions of the two doors - for example, a bigger bottom door and a smaller top leaf or vice versa. If the existing door frame is in good condition, we will manufacture the door alone, or will make the door together with matching frame if the existing frame is rotten. We can also manufacture the door to fit any size aperture- many older houses have doors that are much bigger than the current standard.
Our doors are delivered with two coats of either primer/undercoat (if the final finish is to be gloss paint) or two coats of high quality stain if the customer wishes to keep the natural wood finish.
There is a choice of ironmongery available, giving an individual touch to your door- black antique for an old fashioned, more traditional style, right through to brushed stainless steel for a truly modern look.
The CAD drawings above show two oak stable doors, one with 1 double glazed panel and one with 6 double glazed panels.
