Stable Doors - Not just for horses!

A house stable door is made in two parts, so that either the whole stable door or just the top leaf can be opened. In this way, the entire door can be shut to retain heat in the winter, or when better weather comes, the top leaf can be left open to let in light and air whilst maintaining a degree of privacy and keeping in small children or pets.

The house stable doors top leaf can be solid, can have a glass viewing panel of any size, double glazed if necessary, or it can have a full size glazed top door. This will also let in a lot more light than a solid top door. The glass can be totally individual- for example, you could choose frosted, coloured, patterned or just insert a piece of “bullseye” glass. (We can let you have information on the ranges available- please ask for advice tawvalleycrafts@aol.com) The bottom half of the stable door for a house is constructed from tongue and groove panelling, in to which we are often asked to set a cat flap!

Oak stable door for a house

Stable doors for houses can be constructed from a variety of timbers, softwood or hardwood, although a hardwood such as Iroko would be much more long lasting and is very easy to maintain. We use the traditional mortice and tenon method of construction, which is much sturdier than the cheaper dowelling method, and the section through the door is 55mm, whereas cheaper doors are often 45 mm thick. The top and bottom leaves of the door are rebated together in such a way that the top leaf secures the bottom leaf, and the top leaf is locked with a high quality British Standard 5 lever mortice lock.

As we are bespoke door joiners, our stable doors can be customised to your own requirements. For example, we could alter the proportions of the two doors - for example, a bigger bottom door and a smaller top leaf or vice versa. If the existing door frame is in good condition, we will manufacture the door alone, or will make the door together with matching frame if the existing frame is rotten. We can also manufacture the door to fit any size aperture- many older houses have doors that are much bigger than the current standard.

Our doors are delivered with two coats of either primer/undercoat (if the final finish is to be gloss paint) or two coats of high quality stain if the customer wishes to keep the natural wood finish.

There is a choice of ironmongery available, giving an individual touch to your door- black antique for an old fashioned, more traditional style, right through to brushed stainless steel for a truly modern look.

The photographs on this page show two oak stable doors, one with 4 double glazed panels and one with 6.
