Hardwood House Doors

We have the capability to manufacture a  huge variety of hardwood house doors - we can create anything from a very basic, budget door to a grand feature entrance way that will really make a statement about your property.

The process starts, as do almost all our projects, with a site visit to ensure that all the measurements are accurate. We are very often called in to deal with properties where the door size is not standard, as these items are more difficult to obtain and we have the expertise and facilities to manufacture doors and windows of any size, large or small. We will very often produce CAD drawings similar to the ones show below to ensure that our customer is happy.

If the customer has a firm idea of the design and materials they wish to use, manufacture of the hardwood door can commence, but if we are starting with a blank canvas, then we can offer a large array of designs and photographs of previous work to provide inspiration.

The first decision to take is the type of timber to be used. Softwood is fine for interior doors, but for exterior doors, especially where exposure to the prevailing weather is an important factor, it is better in the long run to use a hardwood. The difference in price can be much less than might be expected- as little as 10% more to use one of the more economical hardwoods. Whatever the timber chosen, we use only tried and tested traditional joinery methods when making our doors- mortice and tenon construction is a little more expensive than the cheaper dowelling technique used in most commercially available doors, but is much sturdier and more able to withstand normal family life and will cope better with severe weather conditions.

Once the type of timber is chosen, we can then move on to the design required. In some cases this is easy, for example if we are simply replacing an existing door that has rotted and a straightforward replacement is required. However, if our customer wants to give their property a facelift, or a brand new property is being built, then there is a wide range of styles with which we can help you.

In some cases, the house will dictate the style. For example, a small thatched cottage would probably look better with a traditional chunky door, whilst a brand new architect designed property could have a bespoke feature entrance with glass side screens to give a more contemporary hardwood door. The great thing about one of our doors is that it can be a simple or as complex as you want, and being involved in the design process will make each door unique. For example, one of our customers lives in a seaside town, and wanted to impart a marine feel to his door- so we inserted a stainless porthole in it and it looks very effective:

The final touches can make even a totally standard door totally individual, as there is a fabulous range of door furniture available, from traditional to modern, ranging through traditional iron to black antique and brushes or polished stainless steel.

We are often asked to include glass panels, and these can be straightforward single or double glazed or beautiful coloured glass and modern designs:
