Bespoke Wooden Conservatories Made In Devon

What is a conservatory?

A wooden conservatory is a building that has not less than seventy five percent of its roof area made of translucent material, and not less than fifty percent of its wall area made of glass.

By definition therefore a new wood conservatory will not only add extra living space for you, your family (and your plants!) but will allow in a much higher level of light and will make the most of what can seem a horribly short summer here in the UK.

Our Devon wooden conservatories can be modern or traditional, elegant or chunky and the choice will often be inspired by the site and the property to which it adjoins. Whatever style you have in mind, or even if you have no idea at all, just ask us and we will help. We can produce accurate designs to give you the feel of what the finished conservatory would be like. An example is shown below.

The conservatories we build in Devon are constructed from high quality hardwoods such as Iroko, and they will give you many years of enjoyment with basic maintenance only. We can use other timber and are very willing to discuss and advise, and are always happy to talk to you on 01271 378296 or email to tawvalleycrafts@aol.com

We obviously cannot talk about hardwood conservatories without mentioning the glass and there are several options from which to choose. These range from the basic questions regarding single or double glazed, to self cleaning and solar control glass to balance out heat gain in summer and coldness in winter. We can also install opaque glass to ensure privacy if necessary. Please contact Chris Chapple for more details.

Planning permission: If your property is listed or if you are in a conservation area, then you will need to speak to your local council to discuss permission. The majority of other properties can have a conservatory built subject to complying with certain requirements. For guidance follow this link to the government portal, but please contact your local council to be absolutely sure:

Installation by our experienced team of Devon joiners can be arranged if you require. It makes sense for the joiners who have constructed the framework to actually install it, as they are intimately acquainted with every piece of timber! We generally erect the conservatory here in our Barnstaple joinery workshop prior to delivery- in this way we can be absolutely sure that it will fit together perfectly.

The ultimate in airy spaciousness is to install folding sliding doors across one wall of your conservatory- the specially made mechanisms enable the whole side of your house to open to the light and sun, as shown in our installation below:

The first image below shows the entire front of the conservatory closed, the second shows the central doors left open and the third shows the front completely opened up for maximum light and air- great for parties and kids!  There is of course also a small side door for day to day use.
