Bespoke Devon Window Types

Window Types & Styles

We manufacture all the standard window types, plus bespoke items such as may be required for listed buildings.

The most commonly requested type of window is the traditional flush casement, an example of which is shown below- both inside and outside are shown:

Traditional Flush Casement Window

These particular windows are in Iroko hardwood, stained with Sikkens light oak stain, and are fitted with "black antique" style handles and fasteners and have trickle vents set in to improve ventilation. Each pane is divided in to 2- this can be done with traditional glazing bars or the Duplex system. For an explanation of these terms please see the technical detail section at the end of this article.

Our windows can of course be stormproof - these windows feature rebated openers which lip over the front face of the window frame and thus ensure even better weatherproofing:

We are also often asked to make sliding sash windows, especially in our local area where there are many older Victorian buildings, many of which are listed and require like for like replacements.

Sliding sashes can now be constructed using two different methods, the first of which is the traditional use of weights and pulleys, where ropes and weights dictate the opening of each part of the window.

The more modern equivalent is the use of spiral balances where a combination of stainless steel spiral rod torsion and tension springs, produces a self contained balancing device capable of maintaining the equilibrium of a sash window at any point in the travel of the sash.

The choice may be dictated by the type of property- for example a listed building will have to have traditional pulleys and weights, whereas the owner of a modern property may wish to have the convenience of the spiral balances. Windows made using the spiral balance system can also be substantially cheaper than those made using pulleys and weights.

We have made windows which mimic the look of sliding sashes whilst actually operating in the same way as a standard window, as in the example below:

In this window, the hinging is the giveaway- apart from this, the windows maintain the look of an old fashioned sliding sash. This is just one example of how our top class joiners can comply with each individual customers design and operational requirements.

Another aspect of our role as bespoke joiners is our ability to create windows of many different shapes, and one in particular that we are often asked to create is a "Gothic"look, several examples of which are shown below:

We can create specially commissioned windows of all shapes and sizes-our fully trained joiners are capable of producing any sort of window, ranging from the smallest porthole to the largest feature window, as can be seen from these images:
