Custom Timber staircases

Specialists in Custom Timber Staircases - Devon Custom Joinery Supplying Southern England

There are a huge variety of types and styles of staircase, ranging from traditional to ultra modern, we will fit any custom timber staircase design to both the style of your property and your budget! Our staircases are all manufactured in our own workshops in Barnstaple, North Devon and are made from scratch using high quality materials and traditional joinery methods. Over the last 15 years we have made staircases of every possible design, material and finish as can be seen in the adjoining images.

When a customer contacts us to discuss a new staircase, we will produce a detailed quotation, including drawings, so that all parties know that the finished product will be exactly according to the design and specifications required.

The first stage in the production of a timber stair case, whether a replacement in an existing property or a new feature in a new construction project, is to take precise measurements. These are used in calculations to ensure that the new stairs will comply with safety legislation - the steps must all be of the same height and the treads must be of the correct depth, and the gaps in the balustrades up the side must also be small enough so that a baby's head cannot become stuck between the bars. The only exception to these rules is when a property is a listed building, and then very often doors, windows and stairs have to replaced “like for like”.

The next stage in the design process is to decide what type of timber staircase to use. A budget wooden staircase which is to be carpeted would probably have MDF treads and risers (the steps and vertical links between steps) and softwood strings (the sides of the stairs). The same budget wooden stair case would have plain square balustrades (the vertical railings to the side of the stairs) and plain square newel posts (the chunky support posts at the top and/or bottom of the staircase). For those with a bigger budget, there are a wonderful choice of timbers, ranging from ash with its pale and contemporary look and wonderful grain, oak for a more traditional appearance, to iroko with its rich warm colour and dense grain. We can of course use any timber suitable for stair construction, so if you have a particular favourite, just let us know (info@devoncustomjoinery.co.uk)

The balustrading on any of our staircases can be made from a range of materials, ranging from traditional timber through to glass, stainless steel, cast and wrought iron. Within each type there are many sub varieties available. Please ask and we will be happy to advise. (01271 378296 ask for Chris Chapple)

Cut string staircases provide an elegant alternative, in that when viewed from the side, the treads and risers protrude through the strings so that the full profile of the treads can be seen, instead of one continuous band of timber running from top to bottom of the staircase. This provides a more light and airy feel to the construction as can be seen in the image below:

A staircase can be a very simple straight flight, or it can have several turns and/or half landings in it. The ultimate in this respect would of course be the spiral staircase, and we have made many of these over the last few years. They allow maximum use of a small floor area and apart from being practical, they are beautiful features in their own right as can be seen in the images.
